NQA-1

The ASME quality assurance standard used for nuclear facility work, and the programme a supplier is audited against.

NQA-1 is the ASME standard setting out quality assurance requirements for nuclear facility applications. In practice it describes the programme a supplier runs - how work is controlled, how design and procurement documents are handled, how records are kept, how nonconformances and corrective actions are managed - and it is the document an audit is conducted against.

For a buyer it functions as a filter: whether a supplier holds an NQA-1 compliant programme, and for what scope, is usually the first question in supplier qualification. For a supplier it is an investment decision, because the programme costs real money to build, staff and maintain before it wins any nuclear work at all - which is precisely why the qualified supplier base is much smaller than the capable one.

A programme is not a stamp on a company. It is maintained at named facilities, audited periodically, and can be found deficient, so the useful record carries the scope, the site and the date it was last confirmed rather than a single flag. That distinction is the same one an ASME certificate makes, and it is what allows a component search to return suppliers who can actually do the work.
