Interconnection queue

The ordered list of generation and large-load projects waiting for permission and capacity to connect to the transmission system.

An interconnection queue is the process by which a new generator or a large new load asks to be connected to the grid, and the system operator studies what that connection would do to the network. Requests are studied in sequence, each study can identify network upgrades the connecting party must fund, and a withdrawal ahead of you can re-scope the studies for everything behind you.

It has become the longest single item on most large build plans. A project can hold land, capital, equipment and a customer and still be years from energizing because the studies and the upgrades they trigger have not completed - which is why an announced data center capacity figure and a deliverable one are different numbers.

For anyone tracking build schedules the queue is the most informative public record there is, because positions, study stages, upgrade costs and withdrawals are all filed. Read as documents they are noise; resolved against the specific loads and generators behind them they are the schedule, which is the argument for holding them alongside firm power rather than in a separate energy feed.
